Introduction to editing

As we started the course, we were given our very own task after being introduced to the basic functions of the camera. We was then put into groups and then given a storyboard which we had to follow for the duration of 40 seconds. Whilst Paige and primrose were directing and filming. Carlton and I were playing the role of the two characters which were fighting with a limited amount of dialogue. Thomas was the bystander which got caught in the cross fire. This was filmed to show our understanding of following and sticking to the storyboard.

After this was filmed we then played back to make sure we had everything and captured the film using final cut pro. when you capture the shots it streams straight onto Final cut pro ready to be edited.

This is our first video that we recorded.

Brief

My given task which i have been given is to produce three main tasks, which was Preliminary Task, the recce and the Main Task. I will now below be showing you viewers how its been placed together and what we had to do

Recce:
we filmed a recce which was basically a scene taken from the main task, but decided not to include it into our main task due to it not really fitting into the film it wasn't needed.

Preliminary Task:
We basically had to produce a 40 second clip which demonstrates our understanding and  awareness of the '180 degree rule' we also came up with a basic concept where there was a conversation between to characters which leads to a confrontation

Main Task:
The reason why for our both films are based on the genre of crime/drama/action is because me and my team mates are originated from North and East London and this is what we are exposed to so we decided to do this film on what

Audience types

The genre of our main task is urban crime drama. The reason why we decided to base it on this genre is because it's what we are exposed to and because we are aged from 16-18 the target audience will be based around our age group so the ideal age group will be 16-25.

We then interviewed three students from different urban areas and college in london and gave them a brief description on the film. Then we asked them would they would they watch it and recommend it to their friends.

This video shows what they said.

Recce

Our Recce was about the prison scene in our main task. This where Thomas comes out of prison from doing his sentence and jayde goes to pick him up. We also added an extra in our Recce who had a brief conversation with Thomas. moments after Jayde comes to pick him up, and they have a conversation. We then thought we will not include this into our main task as it is meant to be 2mins, and it will be irrelevant footage.

180 degree rule Dark Knight

The 180° rule is a basic guideline in film making that states that two characters (or other elements) in the same scene should always have the same left/right relationship to each other. If the camera passes over the imaginary axis

Main Task

My group have decided to base the film on two well known selling films which targets teenagers which are ‘Bullet Boy’ and ‘1 day’. The reasons for this is because my group are originated from North and East London and these two films both express what we are exposed too in modern society.

1 Day

One day is set in an urban area in the UK (Birmingham) involves around the main character ‘Duffus’ who plays ‘Flash’ and receives a phone call from ‘Angel’ who plays ‘Watson’ announcing that he is coming out of prison and demanding his 500K he left with Flash for safe keeping, but when Angel finds out he hasn’t got all the money it causes friction between the pair and the other gang get drawn into this feud.

Bullet Boy

Bullet Boy is set in East London and is based on the main character Ashley Walters who plays ‘Ricky’ and comes out of prison for a stabbing, and when on his way back to his area and his friend (Leon Black) who picked him who plays ‘Wisdom’ crashes into a side mirror and refuses to pay £50 and results to conflict which leads an end results of Ricky dying.

Hard Candy & Training Day analysis

there was two main films we had to analyse and study the camera shots.

Hard Candy: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cgnFIqWPHhI

This image shows ellen page who plays Hayley stark ties up Patrick wilson who plays jeff kohlver to the chair and begins to interrogate him. This powerful image has many symbols for example the colours. The red wall can symbolise lust, flirt, love but at the same time it can symbolise anger, rage, hate.

As you click the link above for the short clip on youtube, this scene shows Hayley tying up jeff to the chair and sort of interrogating him. The colours show dull dark colour to create the intense mood.

Training day: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2FFhuJpXY2M .

This image shows Ethan Hawke who plays Jack Hoyt is having a card game whilst waiting for Denzil Washington who plays Alonso having a card game at a gang house. This image shows that he's in a uncomfortable environment whilst the three others are sitting around the table comfortably dealing the cards

Preliminary task

My preliminary task is a 40 second clip, which had to show a person walking up the stairs, going through a door and conversation which had to be held. Last but not least we had to show our understanding of the 180 degree rule. which we managed to follow through. After the filming we took the best scenes and combined them together using a software called Final Cut Pro, however there was some faults. As I was walking up the stairs, you can see a reflection of the person shooting the scenes which was Grace. Another noticeable fault was that we had a bit of a costume change due to the fact there was a bit of confusion between roles and we had to shoot the preliminary task on two separate occasions.
This is the final draft of the preliminary task
